A ball valve is a one-way valve that is opened and closed by pressure on a ball that fits into a cup-shaped opening. Ball valves are known for reliable, bubble-tight sealing and are a great choice for applications where tight shutoff is necessary. Ball valves are extremely versatile and are available in a wide variety of construction materials, trim options and designs. This versatility is why they are used are used in a variety of industries, such as transmission and storage, gas processing, industrial, and many more. Ball valves provide leak proof service, making them very beneficial in gas companies. Ball valves are also used in flowing systems on ships, fire safe protection services and chlorine manufacturers. When compared to gate valves, ball valves have smaller dimensions, lighter and have multi-way design flexibility. Gate or globe valves do not have the multi-way design flexibility, lowering the number of valves needed. High quality ball valves are able to provide safe service for high temperature and pressure conditions. In addition, less force is required compared to gate and globe valves to control ball valves.
